- MOLDOVA Small landlocked country, about the size of Maryland, sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine just north of the Black Sea. For centuries a province of Romania. Incorporated into the Soviet Union after World War II. Gained independence on Aug. 27, 1991, and in 2001 was the first of the former Soviet states to elect a Communist president. Poorest country in Europe; 25 percent of the citizens of working age are employed out of country. 10th largest wine producer in the world. Nearly 300,000 acres of land are devoted to grapes. Wine producer since the Roman legions tramped through two millenia ago. Summers are dry, winters are mild, humidity is low – the perfect winemaking terroir (the conspiracy of soil, weather, grapes and winemaking savoir faire that produces a wine of distinctive personality).
